I was quite excited when Penny and Brian agreed to do their maternity session at a new location I’d discovered. Extra bonus points to them for getting up early on a Saturday morning! Morning sessions are great for Texas summers. You can beat the heat and still get pretty light that helps create beautiful images. Penny and I consulted before the shoot about a style direction for her clothes. We started with her take on boho chic and then added a belt to provide some definition above the belly. That precious baby inside is the whole reason for the session, after all! Penny went with a loose, wavy “rockstar hair” which was the perfect complement to her style.

Creating the boho chic maternity look

The photos from this session prove that you don’t have to purchase your outfit from a maternity store to look beautiful and fashionable during your maternity session. Penny sent me some photos of empire waist maxi dresses but in the end she just didn’t feel they represented her style. Instead, she purchased a non-maternity dress in a size that accommodated her pregnant belly. Next she added the crochet vest, and beaded sandals she already owned. After Penny sent me photos of herself in the dress and vest I suggested a belt to bring the dress in around her belly. Her studded belt completed the outfit and gave her the picture perfect boho chic look she was going for. The blue and cream of her outfit complemented her coloring and stood out just enough among the tans and greens of the natural setting we chose for the session.
